Stage One: The Story Often Predates the Script

Before anyone yells “action” on a short drama set, somebody has already worked out which story is worth the wager. Track a few hits backward and you often find a book at the start of the chain. Jami Davenport’s novel Shutout underpins vertical drama short film ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort debuted on November 1, 2025, is adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. A web novel and webtoon lie behind Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. Source material sits close at hand since several app owners also run reading businesses: Holywater runs the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Writers turn to reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama whenever no book exists. The script’s job is to boil down a long drama story into scenes that each serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

It is at the casting stage that the format’s economics show up on screen. Scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb and the same names keep popping up. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was led by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, both on GoodShort in 2025, were led by Rosa Singerman, who played opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. A lead with a following on one app reaches the next title with a head start, which matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. DramaBox operates a production team in Los Angeles. Producers also cast with a specific viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

Per TheWrap, a Western short drama is typically filmed in eight to ten days at a cost of $150,000 to $300,000 per series. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is pegged at $150,000 to $250,000. Do the arithmetic and a 70-episode series shot in eight days means close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Leaner numbers still have been reported by Chinese producers selling abroad, with Jiuzhou Culture pegging a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou reported it had made for overseas markets, while original overseas productions made up 20 percent. Dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, so the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Cutting to 60–100 Seconds

The editors cut the footage into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the edit suite, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is designed around a question the next episode promises to answer. The mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, and it serves as the house style. Piece those fragments together and a 70-episode series adds up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. ReelShort also operates official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, letting the same footage find viewers who never open the app. In other words, editors are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Picking Where the Paywall Falls

Last of all comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. In the standard model TheWrap describes, the first eight to ten episodes are free. The free run on ReelShort is usually five to 15 episodes, going by its own blog, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes unlock with coins, and ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Your store may display something different, since prices differ by country, platform and promotion. Paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the contentious part. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and better avoided.

Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series

In the newest production stage, the camera is gone entirely. ReelShort now offers animated motion comics alongside its live-action library. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer get away. Do not mix it up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. DramaWave has gone furthest: according to 36Kr, more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated, and the outlet also reported that the app’s annualized revenue exceeded $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

Established studios have taken notice; Fox Entertainment is the clearest example. In October 2025, Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. In January 2026, Holywater secured a further $22 million in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has gone from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Quick Glance

Placing the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is planned around the shoot, which is the expensive, fixed block. Scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting leans toward recognizable faces, and the edit is designed around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to sum up typical time and cost at each stage. It says so rather than guessing where no reliable figure has been published.

Stage of production Typical time / cost What takes place
Source material and scripting No published figure A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice is based on Shutout, Bound by Honor on Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No public figure Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage
Filming 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame
The edit Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
